Android 2.2 Froyo Released



Just as expected, Android 2.2 was released by Vic Gundotra in the ongoing Google I/O 2010 event.

Among the Big additions include a Just-in-time compiler, Better Exchange integration, Tethering and Portable Hotspot, Device Backup app, Support for Flash 10.1 and AIR Mobile and a new Cloud-to-Device messaging API etc.

Features of Android 2.2:

  1. A Built in Just-in-time Compiler (JIP) which could improve the speed of your Android Device by 2x-5x times.
  2. 20 new enterprise features including tighter integration to Microsoft Exchange, account  auto-discovery and calendar sync along with several device administration APIs.
  3. A Cloud-to-Device Messaging API which Google termed it as “much more than a push notification service designed to make up for a lack of basic features like multitasking” poking fun at Apple’s iPhone and iPad.
  4. Support for Flash 10.1 and AIR.
  5. Tethering and Portable Hotspot feature through you can share your device’s data connection to your PC/Laptop and also convert your device into a portable Wi-Fi Hotspot.
  6. Introduction of V8 Javascript Engine for Android Browser which makes it the “world’s fastest web browser” currently.
  7. The Much awaited ability to shift your apps apps from the Phone memory to SD Card.
  8. Over-The-Air App Installation and Media Streaming from iTunes and Windows Media Player.
  9. Android Application Error Reports: Users can now send Crash Reports of Applications directly from the device to App Developers who can access these reports via their account on the Android Market publisher website.

Along with that, Google also said that Android Marketplace will shortly have a desktop version.  And they will also soon release a Chrome browser extension through which you can send Google Maps directions directly onto your Android device and also any webpage link directly from your desktop to your mobile for future reading.

Well, this update is hugely impressive and a significant update from its previous version, Android 2.1 “Eclair”.
