Android Market Crosses 10 Billion App Downloads. Offers Premium Apps at 10 cents

Android Market seems to have crossed a major milestone today by surpassing 10 billion total app downloads since its launch in October 2008. Google also said that the marketplace is now seeing a growth rate of one billion app downloads per month.

To celebrate this milestone, Google has partnered with a set of few Android developers to offer premium apps for just $0.10 (Rs 5.15 approx) for the next 10 days. These apps include the likes of Asphalt 6 HDSwiftkey XSoundhound InfinityEndomondo Sports Tracker ProMinecraftColor & Draw for KidsFieldrunners HDGreat Little War GamePaper Camera, and Sketchbook Mobile.

While this number is still behind Apple’s iOS app store which had recorded 18 billion App downloads as of October 2011, it is quite interesting to note that Android is now matching iOS in the number of downloads per month with both operating systems recording one billion downloads per month.

Android Market Growth: Android Market’s growth was initially pretty slow with the first billlion downloads recorded after two years of its inception, in July 2010. However its growth has been quite impressive this year with Android market touching 3 billion downloads in March 2011, 4.5 billion downloads in May and 6 billion downloads in July.
