It seems like Apple will not be sticking to the traditional dock connector with iPhone 5, but instead will be introducing a smaller alternative called “micro dock”.
The micro dock is reported to be a smaller version of the iOS device syncing and charging port, but it is not a micro-USB or Thunderbolt. It’s interesting to notice that before the release of the iPhone 4S, the WSJ reported that “the company has been experimenting with features such as a new way of charging the phone”.
The speculation has been is that Apple is switching to a smaller dock connector to increase the internal space resulting in the accommodation of more chips, larger camera sensors, and bigger batteries that can be put in without changing the dimensions of the device. Rumor has it that the iPhone 5 might be Apple’s first iOS device to use the new connector.
