Samsung: HP PC? No Thanks. WebOS? Yes Please

Samsung Electronics, after declining twice about its rumored interest in HP’s hardware division, might now be eying HP’s Smartphone/Tablet OS — WebOS which HP acquired from Palm a year ago. HP hasn’t been able to cash on the the wonderful OS and has decided to drop it.

Last week, HP decided to sell the TouchPad for just $99 which made people change their profession (it’s a joke!). Most of the retailers selling the TouchPad observed sudden demand for it that even iPhone couldn’t garner in such short time. WebOS albeit gained positive critical reviews, it hasn’t been success commercially for one thing — high hardware cost. Samsung, if acquires the WebOS might be able to deliver WebOS devices at much lower cost. But why would Samsung want to do that is beyond me. Samsung currently has too many hands in the pot and wants one more. It manufactures Android, Windows Phone and their own propriety Bada OS.

Samsung’s Bada OS hasn’t got much traction but is doing fairly well in comparison to Microsoft’s Windows Phone. But acquiring WebOS would reduce it’s reliance on Android and HP’s intellectual properties might even help Samsung to strengthen their position against Apple in their ongoing patent war. If not for the Operating System Samsung could snag the WebOS division only for the IP for quite a bargain since HP is anyway shying away from it.

Samsung and HP have declined to comment on the WebOS purchase.
